Fantastic Four Vol.1 #1

The cover states together for the first time, my guess it is because the Human Torch was in Marvel Tales #1. I want a clarification...

Copilot - Did the human torch first appear in Marvel Tales #1 or Fantastic Four #1?

to clarify:

  • Johnny Storm (the Human Torch of the Fantastic Four) first appeared in Fantastic Four #1 in 1961.

  • Jim Hammond (the original Human Torch) first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939 and was featured in Marvel Tales #1 in 1949.

In my opinion the statement isn't truly accurate or isn't necessary, one of the two.

The story opens with a man signalling a message in the sky from a flare gun, The Fantastic Four.

Thinking about what a reader must have thought reading this for the first time in 1961. Must have been exciting and mysterious.

The people on the street take notice of the words in the sky. As do a few others.

The writers were either looking to connect to young readers or develop her youthful age as she is referred to The Invisible Girl, and not The Invisible Woman.

Susan Storm being the first. Unseen by her host, she turns invisible and is obviously making her way to a predetermined rendezvous point. In her hurry she makes her way unseen pushing people creating quite a stir. As she jumps into an empty cab it coincidentally takes her closer to her rendezvous then further.

I mean, I guess so...The cab is pointing in one directions and most likely wouldn't make an unnecessary U-turn.

As Susan Storm attempts to give the cab driver his fare, the driver freaks out and drives away. At this time she states.
IT WORKS! I REALLY AM INVISIBLE!
COMPLETELY, TOTALLY INVISIBLE!

In another part of town we see our next principle character, in a clothing store. The figure is immense and covered completely to hide his physical appearance. He also notices the writing in the sky.
He tears off his cloths of concealment and head for the rendezvous. In doing so he trashes the entrance of the clothing shop on his way out.

So he came in without an issue but in leaving he can't make it out the narrow doorway without demolishing it. mmehh..?

The loud sound gets the attention of some nearby Central City police officers. They shoot at him after the immense figure refuses to stop. Not wanting to give the officiers another change he rips open the street by a nearby manhole cover and jumps underground.

Not sure but it seems that this character who we all know is The Thing, doesn't think he is bullet-proof.

Drifting in the sewer waters of Central City, he feels he has reached the rendezvous and tears open another hole in the middle of the street as a speeding car comes racing towards him. The car hits him but he is not injured.

In yet another part of town we see our next principle character get his car tuned up at a local service center. Everyone there also makes notice of the writing in the sky. Including one Johnny Storm.
So in this image the words are gone and only the number 4 is shown. THis is more iconic of the signal and perhaps the words in the could was to convey the comic title. I did go back and the tailor in the clothing store does make reference to "The Fantastic Four" and not the number 4. Editor err...

Johnny Storm's body becomes totally engulfed in flames, and he flies away. He travels through the skies towards the rendezvous and he get the attention of not only the people on the ground but by the Mayor of Central City and he is calling for The National Guard to intercept this attack. As the pilots fly close to the fiery Johnny Storm, the planes start to melt because of the intense heat, but manage to parachute to safety.

In the distance Johnny Storm notices a hunter missile, headed right for him. He tries to escape but the nuclear missile is closing in fast!

Right before the intended impact two incredibly long arms stretch from a nearby rooftop, grabs the missile, throws it into the water where it explodes harmlessly, and creates the means to save Johnny Storm from an almost certain death.

Who are these 4 astonishing humans?

We flashback to a point in time before these four obtained their fantastic powers. Not wanting the commies..Guessing Russia to beat them into space, Ben Grimm finally agrees to pilot the spaceship with Dr. Reed Richards. Susan Storm is Reed's fiance and Johnny is Susan's brother, so where Reed goes they go, and the four of them infiltrate a spaceport and commandeer the spaceship that Reed has been working on for several years.

As the spaceship makes it's ways into space they go through a cosmic storm. The rays of the cosmic storm penetrate the ship's shielding and pass through the boies of the four inside, affecting each one differently. Johnny gets very warm to a point where he feels he is burning up.

Ben Grimm passes out as every part of his body get extremely heavy where he can't even remain upright. With the ship being misguided due to the cosmic ray, the ship's autopilot takes over and lands them safety back on Earth.

With everyone accounted for, the trip is deemed a failure and are no worried about the long term effects that the cosmic rays might have.

Susan starts to feel strange and he body seems to disintegrate, but in reality, she is becoming invisible. After she is completely invisible, Susan is still alert and cognitive. And then without any indication she becomes visible again.

Ben afraid of the unknown effects starts to become unhinged and lashes out at Reed. Ben starts transforming into some sort of thing, with skin made of rocklike material and he is increible strong. Strong enough to severe a large tree near the base of its roots and as able to wield it like a bat. He takes a swing a Reed, who stays in one place, except for his torso that stretches many feet away from the makeshift weapon. Reed then extends his arms towards Ben and  they stretch into a rope like form and lasso around Ben's body.

Johnny upset that the men before him have turned into monsters, starts to catch fire. At first he is frightened but notices there isn't anything burning up on his body. He body becomes fully engulfed and the flames raises his body into the air. He can fly! Johnny' flamed subside and he eventually lands and jons the other three as the four stand in silence of the recent occurrences.

Reed explain we all have incredible powers and Ben adds and with these powers must use them to help mankind. They all agree and instinctively create names for themselves.
Johnny Storm - The Human Torch
Susan Storm - The Invisible Girl
Ben Grimm - The Thing
Reed Richards - Mr. Fantastic

With the origin told our story continues.

Massive craters around the world are showing up where Atomic power plants used to be.
And according to Reed's Radar Machine one is occurring right at this moment in French Africa. As the entire installation goes underground, another crater is created. But this time something also come out....
A gigantic pair of claws! These claws look thing nothing ever seen before. As the men bring out their artillery against this incredible adversary, they quickly find out their efforts are not effective.
Just as the gigantic creature looks to be unstoppable, a booming voice can be heard.

Back with The Fantastic Four, with the help of his super sensitive Radarscope, Reed is able to triangulate the center of these disturbances, a place known as Monster Island. Ben says Monster Island is only a myth, Susan says there is only one way to find out.

Hours later aboard their private jet, they find it.Monster Island.
Taking a look around they discover a chasm with eyes, and from that chasm,  out comes a three headed monster
The monster starts to attack the Fantastic Four, Sue turns invisible and runs away to hide from the creature, as Reed tries to rope with his rubbery lasso arms. Reed loops him and tosses him into the ocean.
suddenly the ground below Reed and Johnny gives way and the start falling into the earth. Quickly Reed takes the form of a parachute as Johnny takes hold and they float harmlessly to the bottom of the chasm.

Once at the bottom a secret wall opens up exposing an incredibly bright white light, so bright it causes Johnny and Reed to pass out. When the come to they are dressed in a weird, adhesive type suits. Still blinded by the incredible light, a voice can be heard stating you cannot see because you are blinded by the glare from the Valley Of The Diamonds, and I am The Moleman.

Meanwhile Susan and Ben are still above ground as a menacing creature draws near. Ben easily disposes of the monster. Ben says it's time to find your loud mouthed boyfriend.

This is the first instance we become aware of that Ben regrets the effects of the cosmic rays and blamed Reed for his condition.

The Moleman tells his story how society shunned him for his ugliness, and that he decided to live alone and go away and find a place hidden from the rude world. He found Monster Island and while exploring his shouting he found the center of the earth cause an avalanche and the ground broke beneath him sent him spiralling downward, When he woke he was surprised he survived but the impact from the fall made him blind, destined to be stranded forever.
He adapted with bat like senses and master the creatures at the center of the earth and commanded them to do his bidding. His plan is to now attack all the power plant on the Earth and have his creatures destroy everything that lives on the surface. As the Moleman is about to give the command, The Thing and The Invisible Girl find Reed and Johnny.

Going forward I will address them in their hero names unless there is an importance otherwise.

The Thing leaps at The Moleman but The Moleman says you are too late and pulls hmmm...

Copilot - what is the cloth like rope that chimes bells

The cloth-like rope that chimes bells is often referred to as a bell rope or bell pull.

and pulls the bell pull and summons a gigantic creature.
The Human Torch melts out of his adhesive type suit and flies about the head of the gigantic monster distracting it. As the three other members of The Fantastic Four watch their fiery friend, The Moleman tries to escape. Mr. Fantastic notices this and lassos him up with his long rope-like arms, but not before pulling another bell pull. This bell pull summons an army of underground gargoyles.
With the army approaching no one considered how hot the Human Torch could get. He increased his heat to the point that causes the soft earthy rock to melt, causing a large cave in between them and The Moleman and his nightmare army, sealing them off trapping them forever beneath the Earth's crust.

As The Fantastic Four make their way to their small private jet, and take off from monster island, they hope this is the end of The Moleman. While in flight, Monster Island blows up!
Have they seen the last of The Moleman?
